Our view

Effects to a healthy planet.

Source: AEP press release, 19 October 2026. This is a company announcement. The project is still a feasibility study.

The development of the Xe-100 small modular reactors of 80 MW.

Why this matters:

  1. large tech companies are now directly funding new nuclear capacity to secure "carbon-free power" for data centers. That changes how big energy projects get financed.
  2. We don't know the long term effects of a large number of small nuclear reactors to the environment, how we account for the cost, who is responsible for and pay for clean-up.

Note: There is no final investment decision yet. The agreement covers a feasibility study. Construction and operation would follow only if the project moves forward.
